The SANMAN Artist Residency is focused specifically on supporting burgeoning visual arts talent in Houston. The fine arts world can be very restrictive, often stifling many artists early in their careers with educational and class barriers. Our goal with this initiative is to provide dedicated and talented artists the space and tools needed to produce and promote their work.
Collaboration is a core feature of the program because artists are able to work together and create in tandem within a shared space. Our artists work in different mediums and genres, stretching from mixed collage to abstraction to fashion design. During the program, the artists receive professional development and mentorship from esteemed artists in the region. The synergy created within our communal space will be replicated for local patrons to experience and behold.
Program Requirements
The residency offers each artist a private studio space throughout the duration of the program. The residency is nine months long, beginning March 15 and ending December 15, 2025
Artists are required to engage with their studio practice for twenty hours per week at a minimum. A selection of artworks made by the artists throughout the course of the residency will be featured in a culminating exhibition.
One lens based artist will have access to a 24-hour photo lab and community dark room at FLATS , a woman-founded, artist-run photography space located in the heart of Houston’s Montrose neighborhood.
Over the course of the residency program, artists are required to participate in the Open Studios, a number of public programs and educational studio visits.
Artists cannot be in school or committed to another residency while in residence.
