The SANMAN Academy hosted its third workshop, “An Interactive Lighting Workshop,” led by renowned photographers Brent McCoy and Chino Angles. Building on the foundations laid in the previous session, this workshop focused on advanced lighting techniques using studio strobes.
Brent, a creative director, and Chino, an editorial photographer, guided participants through hands-on learning experiences with three models available for photography practice. The session began with an overview of the day’s activities, emphasizing various lighting setups and techniques. Attendees were divided into two groups to rotate between the instructors.
In Chino’s group, the emphasis was on the artistry of shooting, highlighting how subtle adjustments with reflectors, modifiers, and posing angles could transform an image. Meanwhile, Brent’s group delved into the technical side of lighting. He demonstrated the use of a light meter and explained how factors like the distance from the light source and the use of gels affect color saturation and gradients in photographs.
Both instructors utilized tether cables, allowing participants to see their shots in real time and receive immediate feedback. After the first half of the workshop, the groups switched instructors to ensure a well-rounded learning experience.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Brent shared a list of the equipment used and additional educational resources for continued learning. The session was well-received, with many participants expressing enthusiasm for further practice in studio lighting techniques. Overall, the workshop fostered a collaborative and engaging environment, encouraging photographers to enhance their skills in lighting.
